Common Dental Emergencies

At Heathcote Dental Surgery, we are accustomed to providing treatment for a wide range of dental emergencies. If you’re not sure what you’re feeling is a dental emergency, we will still advise you to contact one of our caring dentists for guidance. Feeling constant pain anywhere in the mouth requires treatment and should be looked at to identify the cause. Waiting only elevates the pain and may cause further problems if left unchecked. Quick treatment improves the chances of saving your teeth that have undergone trauma or damage.

Here are some of the most common dental emergencies we routinely help our patients with:

Children’s Dental Emergencies

Children’s dental emergencies can be traumatising for both parents and children. The best thing to do in such situations is to remain calm, comfort your child and bring them to our clinic for emergency dental care. Whether it’s a chipped or knocked out tooth from a fall or sports injury to the lip, we’ll have your little one taken care of as soon as possible – with immediate pain relief, gentle care, and aftercare instructions to keep them relaxed and on the path to recovery.

Toothache or Dental Pain

Tooth pain can result from various issues, such as tooth decay, dental abscess, a cracked tooth, or gum disease. If you experience a persistent toothache which gradually intensifies, rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any food particles that might be causing the pain. Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the packaging and schedule an immediate dental appointment. Our emergency dentist will diagnose the underlying cause of the toothache and provide the appropriate treatment to relieve your pain.

Lost Fillings, Crowns, or Inlay/Onlays

Losing a filling, crown, or inlay/onlay can be distressing and leave the affected tooth vulnerable to damage and sensitivity. If a restoration comes loose or falls out, try to keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. It’s important to seek prompt dental attention to have the filling or crown replaced or re-cemented professionally. Delaying treatment can lead to further complications and may require more extensive dental work.

Abscess and Inflammation

Dental abscesses are serious infections that occur at the root of a tooth or in the space between the teeth and gums. They are often accompanied by severe pain, swelling, and a foul taste in the mouth. If you suspect you have an abscess, it’s essential to seek emergency dental care immediately. While waiting for your appointment, you can rinse your mouth with a mild saltwater solution to help reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort. Applying a cold compress to the affected area may also provide some relief. However, treatment for an abscess requires professional intervention, which may include draining the abscess and prescribing antibiotics to clear the infection.

Trauma and Knocked Out Teeth

Dental trauma, such as a knocked out tooth or fracture, requires immediate action to increase the chances of successful reimplantation. If a tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown and avoid touching the roots. If your tooth is broken into more than one piece, collect the pieces and bring them with you when you visit our emergency dentist. DO NOT rinse or with water if it’s dirty. DO NOT scrub or remove any tissue fragments. The root of the tooth is coated with specialised cells that allow bonding to bone and these cells are destroyed by water! Try to reinsert the tooth into its socket if possible, or if it is safe,  place it under the patient’s tongue. Store it in a container of milk or saline if it is unsafe to place under the tongue of the patient. Quick action is critical for successful reimplantation. Please contact us immediately at the time of the incident if you can.

Oral Soft Tissue Injuries

Injuries to the lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums can occur due to accidental biting, falls, or other accidents. If you experience an oral soft tissue injury, gently clean the area with warm water and apply gentle pressure to control bleeding. Using a cold compress on the outside of the affected area can help reduce swelling and alleviate pain. If the injury is severe or the bleeding doesn’t stop within a reasonable time, visit our emergency dentist without delay. We will assess the injury and provide appropriate treatment to aid healing and prevent infection.
